RYAN Carbon project

The Ryan Carbon Projects, located near Bundarra in northern New South Wales, have reached a key milestone with the issuance of 4,839 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) under the Australian Government’s ACCU Scheme. Developed in partnership with AgriProve, the projects are managed by David, Leonie and Harrison Doran and span 456 hectares across two registered soil carbon projects in the New England region.

The Dorans shifted from conventional set-stocking to a regenerative system focused on soil health. Practices including biological teas, five-day rotational grazing, and infrastructure upgrades have increased stocking capacity by approximately 25%, improved profitability, and delivered verified increases in soil carbon. Of the 4,839 ACCUs issued, 3,000 credits were sold within three months at $46 per ACCU, with revenue reinvested back into the property.

Farm Profile

  • Enterprise: Mixed grazing enterprise using rotational grazing

  • Location: Bundarra, NSW (New England region)

  • Project Area: 456 hectares across two registered projects

  • Rainfall: 757mm mean annual rainfall

  • Livestock: 300 Angus cattle and 1,800 sheep

Leonie Doran: "We've seen incredible changes. Our stocking capacity has increased from 250 cows and calves to 300 head plus 1,800 sheep. The soil compaction has reduced dramatically - we couldn't get a probe down after rain before, and now we can. We're seeing more worms, less fleabane and thistle, and darker green pastures."

Results

Following the 2019 drought, David, Leonie and Harrison Doran transitioned from conventional set-stocking to a regenerative agriculture system focused on soil health and rotational grazing. The transformation involved replacing synthetic fertilisers with biological inputs, implementing five-day paddock rotations, and investing in water and fencing infrastructure to support their 456-hectare operation.

These changes increased stocking capacity by approximately 25%, from 250 cows and calves to 300 head of Angus cattle plus 1,800 sheep—while improving pasture quality, reducing soil compaction, and strengthening overall farm profitability. Soil sampling and independent verification confirmed measurable increases in soil carbon, resulting in a total of 4,839 ACCUs issued under the Australian Government's ACCU Scheme.

Ongoing Practices:

  • Rotational Grazing: Five-day paddock moves to improve pasture rest and recovery

  • Biological Inputs: Biological teas applied in place of synthetic fertilisers to build soil health and biology

  • Infrastructure Investment: Upgraded fencing and water points to support intensive grazing management

  • Multispecies Grazing: Plans to introduce chicory and vetch to diversify pasture systems

Leonie Doran: "After the 2019 drought, we decided we needed to do things differently. We wanted to never buy feed for our stock again and build resilience into our system. Getting the ACCUs issued was validation that our approach was working. The revenue from selling 3,000 credits at $46 per ACCU is already helping us invest back into the property—we're planning to introduce chicory and vetch for multispecies grazing and continue improving our pasture systems."

WHY AGRIPROVE

AgriProve uses data driven tools and unique financing mechanisms to make regenerative agriculture accessible and profitable for farmers. Partnering with landholders and industry leaders to mutually benefit from carbon project success. Our unique ACCU success fee model removes the risk and creates a true partnership for the entirety of the project.

Utilising AgriProve’s innovative, digitally enabled Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) model project partners benefit from the expedited soil sampling and carbon crediting process.

“The Ryan Carbon Project is a great example of how thoughtful grazing management and targeted soil improvement can deliver real, measured outcomes. David and Leonie have worked to strengthen their soils, and this ACCU issuance recognises the additional carbon that has been stored as a result of those changes.”
