Killen Carbon project
Blakney Creek landholders John Lawson and Philippa Yelland have built one of Australia's most closely watched soil carbon projects. Their 47.25-hectare Killen Carbon Project, run alongside a cattle grazing operation 25 kilometres north-east of Yass on the NSW Southern Tablelands, has now generated a cumulative 2,996 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) across two issuance rounds - making it one of only four soil carbon projects nationally to reach a second (T2) round of credits under the 2021 soil carbon method.
The second round, issued in May 2026, added 1,285 ACCUs on top of the 1,711 issued in September 2024. More importantly, it confirmed that the soil organic carbon built in the first round had been held - and continued to grow - through a dry stretch.
By pairing soil remediation practices with strategic land management, John and Philippa have more than doubled pasture productivity, extended the growing season, and lifted the property's livestock carrying capacity to roughly double the baseline in good seasons.
John's expertise in soil health and regeneration extends beyond the farming operation. His other business, SoilRegen, focuses on sustainable soil improvement solutions for Australian farmers.
PROJECT TIMELINE
Project Highlights:
ACCUs issued within 2 years of project operation.
ACCUs issued at T1 and T2 soil sampling rounds.
100% increase in carrying capacity
Soil carbon project started with the use of innovative AgriProve ACCU finance for baseline soil sampling
Results
The Killen Carbon Project focuses on sustainable land management practices designed to enhance soil carbon levels. Central to these efforts are soil remediation activities that improve soil structure and biology, achieved through the use of non-synthetic fertilisers and soil amendments that address macro and micronutrient deficiencies.
John was able to start the Killen Carbon Project by deferring a portion of the baseline soil sampling expenses and funding them with a part of the ACCUs generated.
John Lawson: "We've seen more than double the productivity in our pastures since implementing these soil modifications. The increase in soil carbon has not only improved the fertility of our land but also extended the growing season."
“Carbon farming revenues will enable more productive projects like ours, but capital risk management will require the kind of expertise in which AgriProve is a vital partner and the acknowledged leader”.
WHY AGRIPROVE
AgriProve uses data driven tools and unique financing mechanisms to make regenerative grazing accessible and profitable for farmers. Partnering with landholders and industry leaders to mutually benefit from carbon project success. Our unique ACCU success fee model removes the risk and creates a true partnership for the entirety of the project.
Utilising AgriProve’s innovative, digitally enabled Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) model project partners benefit from the expedited soil sampling and carbon crediting process.
““The support we’ve received from AgriProve has been excellent. Their team has a deep understanding of the system and has been instrumental in guiding us through the process. AgriProve’s expertise made navigating the complexities of soil carbon farming much smoother for us.”
