Mcclelland Carbon project

Chris Almond, who runs a pasture based dairy at Kaarimba, Victoria, has been issued 1,008 ACCUs under the ACCU Scheme through the McClelland Carbon Project.

With support from AgriProve as carbon developer and LawrieCo as agronomy partner, Chris has spent years rebuilding his soil's mineral balance and biology, lifting pasture quality and mineral density without adding to input costs.

Farm Profile

  • Enterprise: Pasture based dairy

  • Project area: 108.9 ha

  • Baseline to retest: 17 months

  • Focus: Mineral balance, soil biology, foliar spraying

  • Pasture: Includes flowering red clover stands

  • Eligible Activities: applying nutrients, no till practice and retaining stubble

Project Highlights:

  • 1,008 Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) issued under the ACCU Scheme

  • Achieved within a 17 month timeline after baselining

  • Biomass held steady while feed quality and mineral density lifted, meaning more milk in the vat from the same tonnage off the paddock

Results

With LawrieCo as agronomy partner and AgriProve as carbon partner, the Almond Park project shows what seventeen years of steady soil work can build. Chris Almond started by getting his mineral ratios right rather than simply adding more, then moved on to introducing and stimulating soil biology, and later foliar spraying. The soils now take in water far more efficiently, so rainfall and irrigation stretch further and the growth window has lengthened.

Chris had already been building humus for years by the time LawrieCo raised the idea of a soil carbon project, so there was nothing new to take on. Testing, measurement and paperwork were handled by AgriProve, and the retest showed a strong enough gain in soil carbon to issue 1,008 credits.

Chris Almond: "The money I've made from the carbon has been an absolute life saver. After a couple of tough years it's given me some cream, and that's made a big difference."
